If you’re up for something slightly longer and more challenging, a great Inca Trail alternative is the 5-day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu. During this hike, you’ll enjoy incredible scenery that includes Humantay Lake and snow-capped Salkantay Mountain.

Best Time to Hike the Inca Trail

Generally speaking, Peru has two seasons: dry and wet. Hiking the Inca Trail is possible during both seasons.

During the dry season (May through October), you can expect warm, dry days and cold nights. Though this also coincides with the tourism season, you’ll experience fine trekking conditions.

During the wet season (November through April), you should be prepared for rainy days and occasional mists. As this is a less popular time to hike, you’ll meet fewer people along the way. If you decide to hike the Inca Trail during the wet season, note that the route is closed in February due to annual renovations.

No matter when you choose to go, our Inca Trail tours will bring you face to face with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes of South America.
